Comfortable Shoes Studio

Comfortable Shoes Studio is the name of my little studio in Beverly, Massachusetts; here I paint large watercolors, smaller acrylics, and mostly bind books and journals. I specialize in custom bound journals and sketchbooks with adhesive-free sewing in which the sewing is visible and decorative on the spine. If you're interested please email me!

If you have known me for a long time you know I've got a few things that I love, bikes being one of them. I just cleaned and rebuilt these cheapie Shimano sis shifters that came on the new-to-me Trek. I had no idea what I was doing but they had seized up. The front started working after a blast of wd40, the rear needed a teardown and clean out and adjustment of the springs inside. I probably spent an hour putting it back together wrong. Repeatedly. After that I adjusted bothe the front and back so they shift better than new. After that the chain, cassette, and gears got a thorough cleaning and dry wax lube. I am debating installing an old rockshox I have in the garage. I have installed my 'zon knock off lights, 1200 (supposedly) on the front and rear. They get warm but wow do they make ya visible. I am adding a few more bosses aka riv nuts to the underside and forks but that has to wait until the kit arrives. I need a decent multi use 700c tire. My current slicks are good for streets only, I need something that can handle packed gravel. #bikelife

I hate scraping paint so so much. But doing a good job on this boring task is worth it in the end. The ONLY paint not peeling is where the original paint peeled off and the good paint I applied sank into the wood. Some of the old stuff just isn't budging. So I'll have to do this again in 10 years or so. 2 coats of glossy exterior paint going on tomorrow.

One of the best parts of my job is teaching people how to print, sometimes the people includes my adult coworkers. Today I spent my morning teaching out marketing guru how to use a vandercook press from start to troubleshooting to printing to clean up.she did great and in a few hours printed 150 copies of new envelopes. A bright orange and bright bright red. The red look a bit more tomato on the ink slab than it does on the white paper. I really need to find time to pull the glass off and paint the base bright white. #printplay #printmaking #vandercook #letterpress #handcarved #functionalart

Well my bike trailer project is a step further in the right direction. I now have wheels!!! Next step is supports in the middle and creating the fold out. I'm keeping some of the uprights for carting stuff, and the old rain fly is in good shape, so it can still snap on. I'm going to test the rainbow ribbon I have for strength and see if I can make.some bungee cord attachment spots around the edges. I'm thinking I might need to make some fenders for it too. I mean why not? #bike #bikelife #futureplans

Lynn Lynn, the city of disrepair, gotta love when places let their structures rot away. Ahem...mbta. once upon a time this was a new probably shiny and pretty structure. Now it's just about to be torn down.

Upgrading to a new to me (2016ish) trek from my old (2005ish) Gary Fisher. I intended to swap parts from the trek to my GF but the stuff that I would have did not fit. Bummer. the adjustable rack won't fit the trek! The trek has a few issues (it was a gift) that I think I can fix with some spare parts from my bike mausoleum in the garage. We'll see. It's nice and upright for commuting. I'll probably sell the GF though I don't think old bikes get that much.

If you have ever worked with teens you will recognize the random nature of this combination. I don't know what it is about boys and erasers but they just destroy them. They poke pencils into them, break them into bits, and apparently drive screws into them. Normally my groups don't open boxes but this group did. It's annoying but also why I keep dozens of pristine erasers in a cabinet. Kids sheesh.

This is a $350 brick. Wish they'd used a whole brick, I could use a whole brick. Half a brick feels half assed.

I poured myself a round gel plate. It works pretty well. It's a good size for standard US letter sized paper.ill be playing with this slightly larger size for the next few weeks. #print #gelprinting #printmaking #art#artist

Sometimes you gotta take a funny subject and upscale it.rubber chicken is an 18x18 inch collage on cardboard. A combination of hand painted paper, old prints, and magazine pages. #artistsoninstagram #artist

Sometimes the ridiculous spawns the even more ridiculous. In this case I made rubber chicken stickers because the group I ran tossed a rubber chicken around the room. So I sketched out a rubber chicken, colored it with @posca_usa pens and then took a pic, cleaned it up then laser printed it onto vinyl sticker paper. Yay stickers!!!!

I had a ton of prints that didn't make the cut for my supporter packs so I did another print on the other end of the paper. I then turned them into a book with drum leaf binding. Not my fave style of binding but a quick one. And a great way to bind up prints quickly. I'll be drawing and doodling on the pages. shown is the front and back cover. I added some drawing with paint markers for the front cover. Enjoying the 3rd eye imagery in there. The image used for the transfer was an old phrenology chart. Racist AF but the shapes drawn on the head are nifty. Kind of the ohm symbol was that in purpose I wonder. #printplay #print #printnerd #gelplate #gelprinting #bookbinding #art also everything was printed on my homemade gel plate.

  • Here's a shot of my index for @jeanettehouse when I have a break in what I'm writing about I add a comma then the next page for that topic. Take RSVP discussion questions those are on page 39, 40, 43, and 44 so far. My vision statement ponderings are on page 34-35, 45. I have also set this up very different from the typical #bujo #bulletjournal it is basic because my side hustle needs are different than my work needs. In this case I don't use a daily log, simply a future log with a monthly log with space for a general to do list. I use a future log, monthly log, and daily log at my dayjob. #basicbulletjournal
