I've ignored the fermentation shelf for the holiday season. Adding a small ferment called holiday hell. Very simple mash of cranberries, apples, clementines, and habaneros in 3% salt. I'll let.it ferment for a few months and taste test. Also have a similar cooked sauce going using sugar instead of an apple. #fermentstuff #fermentedlife #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper #hotpeppers

New seed germination experiment. 19 vials. 3 are single types of soak for things I know work for that variety already. 8 hot and super hot varieties. 10 seeds rinsed of capsaicin then divided, 5 each into a vial of water (filtered) and 1% hydrogen peroxide and soaked for 48 hours. All seeds will go into damp paper towels and baggies in a 75°F hot box. They will be monitored daily for signs of germination. When tap roots hot 1cm/.5in they will be transferred to soil. Expectations: in previous tests water and 1% peroxide worked equally well. I suspect that the rinse makes the most difference in germination and that water/1% peroxide work equally well for softening the seed shell. Other % of peroxide should be tested. I've compiled a list of scholarly articles of research on hot peppers in regards to techniques for germination and the effect capsaicin has on germination. A link will be provided when I write up my findings and post it to fermentstuff.com #growshit #hotpeppers #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper #hotpeppers #wintergarden #proudplantmom

Moving from batch brewing to continuous brew kombucha. Mostly we drink decaf with a bit of fruit juice. CB will let us pull a gallon or 2 a week from the 3 gal tub. Which is about what we drink a week. I'll still make occasional single gallon batches of other tea types. #kombucha #fermentedlife #tastyaf #fermentstuff #continuousbrew #booch

This little guy even with the cup, is the size of most folx empty solo cups. #doublecup #kratky #hydroponic #hotpeppers #wintergarden #growshit #proudplantmom #urbanoasis #citysteading This plant has traveled 300 miles to become a gift. It is a little shocked by the temp change that's for sure. Pulling out all the stops to get it through the next few days.

This bok choy is in my cold frame. Please note that despite the freaking cold it has bolted and is going to seed. Anyone know if bok choy can self pollinate or should I harvest it? If there is no chance of viable seeds I'll eat it. #wintergarden #resilient #tastyaf

I don't show my hydro lettuces as much love as I should. Look at these magnificent bastards. The roots one the lettuce on the left are amazing. The arugala (I think) is a bit slower but has shot longer roots down lately and looks awesome. . I think that next winter I will work on a grow set up for lettuces in the basement. We love lettuces and it would be pretty easy to set up a 4 or 8 ft hydro pipe or couple of tubs. . #growshit #hydroponic #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #lettuce

These tiny little things will grow up to produce the world's hottest pepper, Carolina reaper. I'll put these into soil when the root gets to be about an inch long. So far they look healthy. Some grow notes: these were soaked in a 1% peroxide solution for 24 hours on 1205. They popped on 1214. 9 days for super hots is good. 2 of the 3 germinated and the third could still. Seed looks healthy. It has 2 days for the first to pop to get to this size. From here it will grow faster. By Friday I'll be potting both. . These will not be #officepeppers instead I'm going to move a couple of my macho peppers to my office. These will get premium #wintergarden grow space. If I'm honest I only like reapers for sauce and cooking. I don't like the taste alone and I don't like the bite of their heat. For eating I prefer a scotch bonnet or habanero. The little machos are tasty too. I'm thinking of taking a 1 gal grow bag into work with 3 macho pepper plants in it. Itll be cute and produce fruit. No super hots at work. #growshit #hydroponic #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #foodporn #hotpeppers #wintergarden #grow #futureferments

What you can't see in this image is that 100% of these red scotch bonnets germinated. These are for my #khristmaskratky contest plant. The largest went into a recycled kcup and will get a 72oz kratky set up. I can't wait for scotch bonnets, they are among my favorites of the hot peppers. Their flavor is amazing, plus they got that scorching heat for sauces. These were soaked for 24hrs in hydrogen peroxide starting on 20191201 then put onto paper towels in a baggie. The baggies was kept between 70 and 80 degrees F. The large one popped open 2 days ago. For a hot pepper 100% germination in 12 days is pretty good. I'm hoping that my soaking experiment will have similar results. Not sure what I'm going to do with the 60+ habaneros from that experiment though. #growshit #hotpeppers #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper #wintergarden #grow #hydroponic #lifelonglearning

Finished the indoor garden set up. 5 reflectors. 2 with grow bulbs and the rest with daylight bulbs. Interesting that some of the plants seem to prefer the daylight over the grow bulbs. Specifically the lettuce does better under daylight, peppers like the grow bulbs. #growshit #hydroponic #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper #hotpeppers #wintergarden #grow

You'll notice that sad gochu is no longer sad, she's pretty happy now. Leaves look good, and she's jumped up in height, not leggy at all. Still really far behind peers but better. #growshit #hotpeppers #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper #hydroponic Also don't give plants like aloe regular plant nutrients, it burns them, my bumpy little aloe is not happy.

Conducting a seed germination experiment. I've done some reading about getting hard to germinate seeds to start. Soaking un water, hydrogen peroxide, aspirin, nicking the seed coat are all things I've read about. So I'm testing them here. Habanero isnt the hardest seed to start but since I have several hundred seeds, that's what I'm using. Each vial has 10 seeds. I have a vial of plain water, 1% peroxide, 100mg aspirin in 5ml water, knife nicked and one with nothing done. They will soak for 24 hours at room temp. Then 5 will go into paper towels and 5 into seed starting mix all will go into the temp controlled box. Then we'll see which method works best for getting these seeds germinated faster than paper towel in a baggie alone. . Anecdotally I have noticed that soaked hot pepper seeds look better than those not soaked. Those soaked in peroxide look better than those soaking in just water. . Super hots are a pain in the arse. I plan to use this method with tomatoes as well. #growshit #hotpeppers #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #plantd

Last night I couldn't handle the pressure under the nail. It hurt like hell and my finger tip was... painful. So I drained the fluid from under the nail. It is a kind of scary thing to do, but I've had to do it more than once, this was the most fluid I've ever had come from under a nail. Nasty. I will still lose the nail eventually. But at least for now I can type and it doesn't feel weird.

Cleaned perilla (right) and buchu (left) seeds. No need to clean off the perilla flowers, but I needed to fit it into my seed storage folders. Hundreds of little seeds that will provide me with loads of flavor this summer. Can't wait to ferment and eat these. #growshit #gardengoodies #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm

That'll be falling off. Decided to be productive on my half day off due to evacuation of the building I work in. (all my coworkers and I are fine as are our clients.) I cleaned the ash out of the pellet stove and then managed to slam my finger in the lid of the pellet stove. This thing is a throbbing mess. Iced it and everything. Jeebus crisco.

Messing around with tiny appliques and patchwork. Snowy days are ment for sitting infront of the fireplace with my plants and stitching things. Finally picked up a hoop. Realized I need a smaller one, but this one will do for now. This will get stitched onto my patchwork shirt. #stitching #patches #handcrafted

Sad gochu. The light I was using died. Not the bulb but the light itself. Sad gochu is leggy and pale. I'm going to bring in a new led for another light fixture I have in my office. I changed out the nutrients and gave them a weak solution. #hotpeppers #wintergarden #growshit #proudplantmom #urbanoasis #citysteading #cityfarm #pepper
